Chip & Snack Bags
- DON’T put these bags into curbside recycling
- DO consider dropping-off these bags at a collection point. (see below)
About These Items
These multi-layer bags are often made from both plastic and foil. They help to keep snack foods fresh. Unfortunately, chip bags of any kind are not accepted in the City of Pittsburgh’s curbside recycling. Due to their light weight and material variation, they generally aren’t desired or accepted in most recycling programs.
REI is currently collecting snack wrappers including chip bags (both large and small) for recycling through TerraCycle. There is also a local artist who is collecting small bags for an art display. See below for more information.
If you want to reduce the amount of these bags you generate, consider buying snacks in larger sizes rather than snack sizes. This reduces the volume ratio of plastic packaging to food. You can also look for snacks packaged in paperboard boxes or reduce the amount of processed snack foods you purchase.
Recycle at REI through TerraCycle.
Subaru has partnered with REI to offer a TerraCycle snack wrapper recycling program at REI locations.
Currently (as of Feb. 2020) REI at South Side Works is collecting through this program. You can bring all snack wrappers including candy, chips, and granola to drop off in this box.
Donate to local artist.
Jennifer Schurman is a local artist who creates 2D and 3D art using post-consumer waste. She is collecting foil-lined chip and snack bags for her work.
She has collection bins at the East End Food Coop and nearby Construction Junction. Please be kind and make sure your bags are free of food crumbs before you drop them off!
