About These Items

These disks are used for media from music to movies to personal files. With most media moving to digital-only formats nowadays, many people are now getting rid of these physical discs. They can’t be recycled through Pittsburgh’s curbside recycling but they can be locally donated or mailed to a recycling program. (See below)

Donate to Center for Creative Reuse

These discs, even if damaged, can be reused for art! The Center for Creative Reuse accepts all of these discs (but not their cases).

Recycle locally.

PRC (Pennsylvania Resource Council_ accepts these discs, their cases, and also other media formats at their weekly e-waste collection events for City of Pittsburgh residents. The price (as of of November 2019) is $0.35 per pound. You are not required to separate discs from their cases, but it’s helpful if you do.

Mail them in to be recycled.

GreenDisk accepts a variety of “technotrash” via mail, including most disk/tape media and their cases.

The CD Recycling Center of America has closed due to COVID. If you’d like to be on their mailing list to be notificed when they reopen, email info@cdrecyclingcenter.org.

The CD Recycling Center of America accepts CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs (as well as related disc packaging and cases.) There’s no fee to send in items other than the shipping you pay though they do encourage donations, suggesting at least $2 to help them with costs.

Visit https://www.cdrecyclingcenter.org/centers/submission to get details on mailing in your discs and packaging. Remember to separate all discs and paper inserts from cases before you mail them in!
