Ribbons & Bows

  • DON’T put these items into curbside recycling
  • DO try to reduce and reuse these items

About These Items

Ribbons and bows are popular accessories for wrapped gifts but they are not accepted in most recycling programs, including in the City of Pittsburgh. Long ribbons are particularly problematic to recycling sorting equipment so make sure to remove any of these items from wrapping paper before you recycle the paper!

Consider forgoing these items altogether, or save and reuse them, to reduce waste.

Donate to the Center for Creative Reuse.

Ribbons and bows are accepted as donations at the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse, which is a non-profit, non-traditional art supply shop located at the intersection of Wilkinsburg, Homewood, and Point Breeze, where people can donate and shop for used art and craft supplies.

These plastic pill bottles are partially accepted by the city’s curbside recycling program. The bottle bases can be placed in with your other curbside recyclables, but the caps or lids are too small to be accepted. However, the caps can be recycled through other channels.

Make sure you remove any paper labels on your bottles–not only does this help recyclers, it also protects your private health information! Also wash out the inside to remove any medication residue.
