Recycle This Pgh

Hello [subscriber:firstname | default:reader]

It's the height of summer and it looks like this new normal is here to stay for a while at least. Many recycling programs are collecting again but, of course, things continue to change, so if you are dropping off or mailing in items, please double check to make sure that program is currently active. We are trying to keep our entries up to date but your tips are super helpful- if you hear about a program on hold or re-opening, contact us.

LOCAL RECYCLING NEWS

  • #5/#2 Plastic Collection, August 16th!. Precious Plastic Pittsburgh will be hosting a post-quarantine plastic purge at a new collection and eventual shredding location! If you've been saving those clean #2 and #5 items that aren't accepted curbside, please bring them to 1225 Larimer Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 on Sunday, August 16th, 11am-4pm. The Precious Plastic team will be outside, weighing and collecting your plastic. The cleaner the better! Please remember to wear a mask and follow Precious Plastic Pittsburgh on Instagram @preciousplasticpgh for updates and more exciting news to come!
  • City Services continue to be stretched thin. While most recycling and refuse pickups has continued on schedule this summer, some neighborhoods have experienced missed recycling pickups over the last month because of personnel shortages. Keep in mind that these city workers are essential workers doing a hard job during a difficult time. If your pickup is missed, hold on to it till next time. (You can also always drop off your recycling at a city dropoff location) And if you see the pickup crew, give them a thumbs up and a thank you!
  • Pennsylvania Resource Council is holding hard-to-recycle collection events for items like televisions, freon appliances, tires, polystyrene blocks, etc. This year you must register for these events ahead of time as space is limited to allow for safe physical distancing for everyone. There are fees for some items, but other items are accepted for free. PRC is also holding both recycling and composting webinars.

New Items on Recycle This Pittsburgh

In addition to this month's new item entries, there have been a number of questions about items posted on our request page. When we can, we try to provide quick answers there when we aren't able/ready to make a full post. This is also a space where anyone can comment and suggest a recycling solution for an item.

Cables, Cords, & Chargers

With the proliferation of digital devices and accessories, and the ever-changing standards for connectors and form-factors, it's easy to end up with a pile of unused or broken cables at home. You can't recycle harging cables, power cords, headphones, audio cables, coax cable through Pittsburgh's curbside recycling, but there are plenty of drop-off options, including at least one that will pay you a (very small) amount for your old cables.
Examples of various electronic cables such as USB, iphone charger, headphones, etc.

Window AC Unit

Window AC Unit
The City of Pittsburgh does not accept any appliances containing freon (or other refrigerants) like window air conditioning units in curbside pick-up for trash OR recycling, even under bulk waste pickup. Instead, you'll need to service or drop-off location.
