New Items on Recycle This Pittsburgh

Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFL Bulbs)

These light bulbs are recognizable by their form factor, which usually involves thin tubes folded into the general shape of a traditional lightbulb. Sometimes these folded tubes are encased in an exterior shell. These bulbs are hazardous waste. They can not be recycled via curbside recycling and should also not be placed in the trash. CFLs contain mercury which can leak into our soil and water supply when placed in a landfill (or if broken when squished in your trash can!)

Paper Bags

Example of a paper grocery bag
Paper bags are a staple of grocery shopping, school lunches, and pharmacies. They can be recycled as mixed paper through the city's curbside recycling pickup as long as they are empty, unspoiled by grease, and you remove any special non-paper handles

Paper Egg Cartons

These paper-based cartons are commonly used for eggs at local grocery stores. They can be recycled as mixed paper through the city's curbside recycling pickup.

Air Pillows

Example of air pillows used for shipping
Air pillows are sometimes as protective filler in boxes when shipping small or fragile items. These disposable "pillows" are made of polyethylene plastic film like plastic shopping bags. While they are not accepted by the city of Pittsburgh's curbside recycling, they can be dropped off at local collection bins for plastic film recycling (see below). Always deflate these pillows before dropping off for recycling.

Bubble Wrap

Sheets of bubble wrap are used to protect fragile items when they are shipped. Unfortunately, bubble wrap is not accepted by the city of Pittsburgh's curbside recycling. Bubble wrap is made of polyethylene plastic film like plastic shopping bags, so it can be recycled the same way at local collection bin for plastic film recycling.

Corrugated Cardboard Boxes

Many items are shipped in corrugated cardboard boxes. Clean corrugated cardboard is accepted for curbside pickup in the City of Pittsburgh's recycling program.
