Hello [subscriber:firstname | default:reader]

Did you miss us? Recycle This was on a brief summer break during August, but we're back for the new fall season with new items. This week we released a set of posts on cartons: Ice Cream Cartons, Soup Cartons, and Milk & Juice Cartons. (Quick summary: unfortunately none are recyclable in Pittsburgh's curbside program)

New Items on Recycle This Pittsburgh

Ice Cream Cartons

Ice cream and other frozen treats often come in these paperboard cartons. They are lined with polyethylene (PE) plastic inside to help the container with stand its contents and the freezer environment. These cartons are not accepted in the City of Pittsburgh's curbside recycling.

Soup Cartons (& other shelf-stable liquids)

Some liquids products such as soups, broths, and some milks/creams, come in these rectangular "paper" cartons, called "aseptic packaging" that allow for these liquids to be kept sterilized and shelf-stable until opened. They are often labeled "Tetra Pak" and are typically foil-lined inside. They may seem very similar to other paper-based items that are accepted in curbside recycling in Pittsburgh such as paper egg cartons or cereal boxes. However, these cartons are not accepted in curbside recycling.

Milk and Juice Cartons

Often half-gallon or smaller containers of milk and juice come in these gable-topped paper cartons. These cartons may seem very similar to other paper-based items that are accepted in curbside recycling in Pittsburgh such as paper egg cartons or cereal boxes. However, cartons are not accepted in curbside recycling. The reason is that to process these cartons for recycling requires specialized equipment at the processing point- equipment that the city's processor does not have.
