This week we round out cartons with an additional post on Juice Boxes. We also finally answer the question of recycling Paper Receipts. And we added a post for Foam Blocks as well. Read the summaries below.

New Items on Recycle This Pittsburgh

Foam Blocks

Heavy products like appliances, etc. are often protected within shipping cartons using custom-shaped foam blocks made of expanded polystyrene. These foam blocks are not accepted in Pittsburgh's curbside recycling but they can be recycled locally through special collection locations.

Juice Boxes

Example juice box
A staple of children's lunches and events, juice boxes are typically small paper cartons lined with plastic or aluminum foil inside. This kind of packaging is called "aseptic packaging" and allows for these liquids to be kept sterilized and shelf-stable until opened. They are often labeled "Tetra Pak" on the bottom. They have logos indicating that they are recyclable (after discarding the straw and straw wrapper). However, juice boxes are not accepted in the City of Pittsburgh's curbside recycling.

Paper Receipts

With nearly every in-person retail interaction we are offered receipts. These thin, printed slips of paper might feel easy to recycle but they are not accepted by Pittsburgh curbside recycling nor should you compost them. The reason is that they contain harmful chemicals Bisphenol A (BPA) or Bisphenol S (BPS) that contaminate other recyclables and the environment. These chemicals have been shown to impact human health. It is best to put receipts in with your regular trash, so that they go to a landfill and are contained.
