Hello [subscriber:firstname | default:reader]
We've recently added two seasonally appropriate items to Recycle This, just in time for fall and Halloween - Candy Wrappers and Leaves. We've also got the answer to a requested item: Aluminum Foil. Read the summaries below.

News in Recycling for Pittsburghers:

New Items on Recycle This Pittsburgh

Leaves

Given Pittsburgh's climate, many people end up with dropped leaves in the fall. Not surprisingly, leaves are not regularly accepted with Pittsburgh's curbside recycling. However, the city does offer a curbside pickup for yard waste, including leaves, twice a year.

Aluminum Foil

Aluminum Foil
A staple of the kitchen, aluminum foil itself is very recyclable but because of its form factor and how it typically comes in contact with food, it can be a contaminate for other recyclables and is not accepted by the city's curbside recycling program. However, at least one local scrap collector will accept aluminum foil for drop-off (see below), you just have to make sure it's clean.

Candy Wrappers

These wrappers encase most types of candies. They help keep candies fresh and clean in single-serving portions but the result is each serving you eat generates a throwaway wrapper. Candy wrappers are not accepted in the City of Pittsburgh's curbside recycling. Due to their small size, light weight, and material variation, they generally aren't desired or accepted in most recycling programs. In general, candy wrappers should be placed in trash to be taken to a landfill.

Thank you Keith for asking the Aluminum Foil question. Thanks to City of Pittsburgh Environmental Services, Construction Junction, and Tomson Scrap Metal for answering questions.
